KJ Wright was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was at the ripe age of 22. Now in his early 30’s (31) and he is a free agent.
We are less than a month until the beginning of the 2021 season starts and he is still unsigned.
Wright has played his entire career with the Seahawks and was part of the Seattle Seahawks Legion of Boom defense in 2013 that won the Super Bowl. He has been an integral part of the Seahawks’ rebuilding defense alongside Bobby Wagner for years. Throughout his career, he is averaging 104.5 tackles per season. He has reached the 100 tackle plateau on multiple occasions. So the question is:
Why Is KJ Wright Still A Free Agent?
He has been one of the most efficient Right Outside Linebackers that the NFL has ever seen. He is a hard hitter and can fly across the field and even though, he is getting up there in age he can still produce and be a mentor to younger guys on a roster.
Could there be a reunion with the Seahawks?
The Seattle Seahawks Front Office has said they have left the door open to talk about a reunion. But a year ago the Seahawks drafted Jordyn Brooks, who they may pair alongside Wagner. Which again, where we have seen KJ since 2012. But Besides Wagner and Brooks, the Seahawks do not have another predominant Linebacker. The others on the roster are; Cody Barton (special teams), Ben Burr-Kirven (special teams), Benson Mayowa (slots better on the line), and Darrell Taylor (we know nothing about him, and he is said to be a DE). So there is always an option with this possibility, but the outcome right now doesn’t look so good. Even though, the Seahawks still have a need at Strong Outside Linebacker, with Brooks transversing to an every-down back on the weakside.
KJ who is not the only Former Super-Bowl champion that could make a reunion with the Seahawks, both Bruce Irvin and Richard Sherman are also free agents.
Does KJ want too much money?
Last year, KJ Wright was making 7 million with the Seattle Seahawks. Which made him the 20th highest-paid OLB in the NFL. But does he want more than that? There is a good chance that he does and deservedly so. Throughout his career, KJ has only had two seasons in which he played less than 15 games, and one season less than 10. So you can say he has been an ironman for the Seattle Seahawks over the last 10 years.
Besides the Seahawks, Who Could his services:
There are actually quite a few teams that could use the services of someone like KJ according to Pro Football Focus. Those teams are; the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, and the Philadelphia Eagles. As much as Seahawk fans would hate to see it, two teams in the NFC West could use KJ: The Arizona Cardinals, and the Los Angeles Rams.
There is no question that KJ Wright still deserves a contract and a spot in the NFL. The question is who will sign the former pro-bowler at 31 years old.
