Just five days after the Bradley Beal trade, the Washington Wizards have another blockbuster trade in the works. Kristaps Porzingis has been traded to the Boston Celtics as part of a three-team trade. The rest of the deal includes Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies and Tyus Jones and the 35th overall pick to Washington. Porzingis is expected to pick up his $36 million player option. The Celtics also get Grizzlies first-round picks for the next two years.
Trading away Beal and Porzingis signals that the Wizards are blowing up and going into full rebuild mode. The deals themselves are terrible. Depending on the draft compensation, the Wizards get no first-round picks in return. Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, Tyus Jones, and multiple second-rounders are a poor return for two all-star caliber players. The Wizards are exploring trying to get a third team to get Chris Paul’s contract. This was more of a salary dump than anything.
The Grizzlies made a surprise appearance has reported earlier the deal fell apart. Malcolm Brogdon’s injury status was a concern for the Clippers which “led to the collapse” of the three-team trade. Giving up two first-round picks and Tyus Jones for Marcus Smart is a hefty price to pay. Seems more baffling considering Jones played well when Ja Morant was suspended.
You would think they would keep him with Morant once again suspended, this time for the first 25 games of the season. Speaking of big threes, the main piece of this trade, Kristaps Porzingis, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum could also push them into the 18th ring to add to their stacked collection. The problem will be with the salary cap, Brown is due for a supermax extension, and paying all three guys make up a total of $118 million dollars. With the new CBA, they will be very limited in making more moves in the offseason.
