Will Lauri Markkanen and the Jazz Battle for a Spot in the Playoffs?

Timberwolves interested in Lauri Markkanen

Once the Utah Jazz moved on from franchise centerpiece Donovan Mitchell, their postseason hopes sank down the drain. Despite an all-star showcase from Lauri Markkanen, the Jazz struggled to strategize in a historically talented Western Conference. The only way out seemed to be a complete rebuild from the ground up.

Last season, Utah finished as the 12th seed with just 31 wins. The team was stumped in several areas as Markkanen was sidelined for weeks, forcing head coach Will Hardy to adjust in minimal time frames. Winning games in these circumstances can be complex, especially with a young roster focused on development.

With a healthy Markkanen and an athletically inclined rotation, the Utah Jazz could sneak upon multiple playoff contenders in the Western Conference. They have superstar talent taking command and countless role players looking to contribute. Undoubtedly, Utah will fight their hardest for a spot in the play-in tournament.

With Lauri Markkanen’s star presence, the Utah Jazz will challenge opponents for a top-eight seed.

The Utah Jazz have some of the brightest young talents in the league around Lauri Markkanen. Three-level threat Keyonte George is coming off an extremely productive rookie season, and glass-cleaning center Walker Kessler is developing into one of the best shot blockers in the NBA.

Moreover, Utah will need another all-star next season to qualify for the playoffs. Fortunately, the coaching staff does not need to make a trade, as John Collins has more than enough talent and experience to meet the team’s needs.

The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon averaged 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds last season, shooting 53.2% from the field and 37.1% from three. These numbers are beyond impressive in just 28 minutes per game. If Collins spends more time on the court, he will inevitably reach the all-star status.

Nonetheless, Markkanen must step up and motivate the rest of the group. The staff should leave it upon him to take responsibility and become a role model for the locker room. If players begin to learn from Markkanen’s footsteps, Utah will be in good shape for a promising playoff run.
