It is official. Today it was reported that Liverpool is for Sale! Fenway Sports Group, the majority ownership group of Liverpool FC has put the club up for sale. They will be handled by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley banks. This has been a busy year for sales. Several high-profile sports teams have changed hands already or are coming up for sale. The Denver Broncos recently sold and the Washington Commanders and Phoneix Suns are expected to sell soon. This has been a busy period with three premier league teams recently changing hands.

Fenway Sports Group is an American-run consortium led by John Henry and Ted Werner. They also have several celebrity owners like Lebron James, a prominent Liverpool supporter. FSG are owners of the Boston Red Sox as well as partners in Roush Fenway Racing. They purchased Liverpool in late 2010 from another American ownership group headlined by Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. They paid $300 million for the club. Their initial purchase of Liverpool helped bail the club out of some debt so they were able to secure a lower initial purchase price. However, after a very successful decade-plus with over half a dozen trophies, they should see a significant return on their investment.
How much is Liverpool Worth?
FSG is the next ownership group looking to cash in on the exclusive club of Premier League ownership. The three most recent clubs to change hands in the Premier League were Newcastle United, Southampton, and Chelsea. Newcastle was acquired by a Saudi group for $300 million. Southampton sold to Sports Republic for $100 million. Chelsea on the other hand sold for $3.2 Billion to an American group headlined by Todd Boehly. This is another Premier League group with MLB ties. FSG is hoping to at least mimic if not surpass Chelsea’s sale price. Liverpool finally broke their modern premier league duck in 2019. So the combination of major success in the last few years and significant history as the of the most storied clubs of all time FSG should make a monstrous profit.
