Logan Cooley has signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Arizona Coyotes. Cooley was originally slated to continue his collegiate hockey career with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
However, over social media, Cooley said that, “When I posted about coming back to school a few months ago, I was fully planning to return for my sophomore season. Over the past months, I have realized that deep down, I feel ready for the challenge of playing at the highest level in the world and I want to fulfill my lifelong dream of being an NHL player. The hardest part of coming to this decision was feeling like I was letting people down, but I have to be true to myself and do what’s in my heart.”
Logan Cooley was the 3rd overall draft pick of the 2022 draft, selected by the Arizona Coyotes. During his one year with the University of Minnesota, Cooley had 22 goals, 38 assists, totaling 60 points in 39 games. Cooley was also a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the NCAA’s best player that year. Cooley’s efforts would help elevate Minnesota to a National Championship appearance as well.
Cooley also notably played for team USA in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championships. In the seven games played, Cooley lead the team in scoring with seven goals. He also had seven assists, and the United States would go on to win the bronze medal in the tournament.
With this addition, the Coyotes continue to amass weapons to a rebuilding roster. Some of the Coyotes biggest offseason signings include forwards Jason Zucker, Nick Bjugstad, and defenseman Alexander Kerfoot. Last year, Arizona finished the season with a record of 28-40-14. They placed 7th in the Central Division and 13th overall in the Western Conference. However, Cooley and the new recruits will look to set the Coyotes sights a bit higher.
