Wrigley Field could host an All-Star game in 2027 or 2028, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says.

Wrigley Field has been undergoing numerous renovations since 2014 and has completely modernized the gameday experience for fans. Still, the Chicago Cubs have been overlooked for opportunities to host an All-Star Game.

During a press conference on Thursday, Manfred suggested that the Cubs and Blue Jays are in a good position to host the All-Star Game in 2027 or 2028.

“With respect to those two years, I am strongly influenced by two things. One, when did you last have a game? Toronto stacks up pretty well on that variable. I think Chicago is older,” Manfred said.

Manfred also talked about cities willing to step up in terms of facilities and security is the other issue the MLB has to deal with.

Considering Manfred’s first claim, the Blue Jays and Cubs are both prime candidates to host an All-Star Game. Since the Blue Jays last hosted the game in 1991, they have a strong case, especially with the recently renovated Rogers Centre. The Cubs haven’t hosted the game at Wrigley Field since 1990. Chicago did host it in 2003 at what was then known as U.S. Cellular Field.

With renovations completed in and around Wrigley Field, Manfred has the opportunity to host a Home Run Derby and All-Star game at the Friendly Confines.

The league has already set the host cities for the All-Star Game for the next three years. Arlington will be hosting the game this summer for the first time since Globe Life Field opened in 2020. The Atlanta Braves will host in 2025 and the Philadelphia Phillies will host in 2026.

The Cubs made their most recent attempt to host during the 2025 season when they were in the mix to do so. Wrigley Field was eventually surpassed by the Atlanta Braves’ home field, Truist Park.
