Mariners Call Up No. 4 Prospect Emerson Hancock

Emerson Hancock gets the call up. The Seattle Mariners are calling up their fourth best prospect in their farm system and their best pitching prospect, Emerson Hancock. The 21-year-old was drafted sixth overall by the Seattle Mariners in the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia. He will now join three others of his teammates that was highly drafted out of college or high school, including Bryce Miller, Logan Gilbert and George Kirby. Emerson Hancock has thrown 98 innings at Double-A this season, posting a sub-four ERA (earned run average) with 107 strikeouts and 38 walks. The former Georgia Bulldog nursed injuries, including a shoulder injury in 2021 and a right lat issue in 2022. Although, his velocity on his fastball dropped to 94 miles per hour after settling at 96-97 mph, he still has good control and command of his stuff. Hancock also had the ability to throw strikes at a dominant pace, as he struck out more than a batter an inning. Out of college as a Bulldog, one of the worries was his slider, well forget that because reports say his slider is much improved thanks to his commitment to going back to a shorter, firmer shape.

With all the success drafting pitchers, it is obvious that Seattle is doing this the right way, building their pitching through the draft, aside from Luis Castillo and Robbie Ray. How this rotation looks next year is going to be interesting, but I would assume you could put two of the starters as long relievers out of the bullpen to save the bullpen. Either way, here is a start to the Emerson Hancock Era in Seattle.
