Luis Castillo is the New Ace in Seattle

Luis Castillo and the Seattle Mariners have agreed on a five-year $108 million extension with a sixth-year option. This deal includes a no-trade clause for the first three years. The Mariners acquired Castillo this past trade deadline from the Cincinnati Reds for four prospects. The Mariners were quick to extend Castillo, which was smart considering he was entering free agency this winter.

Luis Castillo has been stellar this year, posting a career-low 2.85 ERA. Castillo became the first Mariner to strike out 60 batters in his first eight starts as a Mariner, while only giving up 13 earned runs over that stretch. Extending Luis Castillo seems like an easy choice, but what does this mean for the future of the Mariners?

Something Special is Happening in Seattle

The Mariners are on pace to break a 21-year playoff drought, and they seem to be bulking up their starting rotation for years to come. Seattle’s rotation as of right now looks like Luis Castillo, Robbie Ray, Logan Gilbert, and George Kirby. With a loaded rotation, the Mariners are no longer looked at as the little brother in the American League West.

Castillo’s extension comes only several weeks after the Mariners also extended 21-year-old superstar, Julio Rodriguez, to a 12-year $210 million extension. Rodriguez is slashing .280/.342/.502 in his rookie year and is favored to win Rookie of the Year. The young talent is leading the way in Seattle to their first playoff appearance since 2001.

These extensions are a promising sign for Mariner’s fans. It will be interesting to see if the Mariners decide to keep adding on to this talented roster during the offseason.
