It’s clear to everyone that the Mariners have not played up to their potential this season. No matter who you want to blame… it had become apparent on the Mariners last road trip that Scott Servais had likely lost the locker room. According to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic, the Mariners are now expected to fire their manager.
The Mariners offense has been almost nonexistent this season. The Mariners have also lost some games due to Servais’ management of the pitching staff. As of now, the Mariners have not made an official announcement. Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto has never fired anyone midseason coming into this season, but has had to now fire Brant Brown and Scott Servais. Wilson has not had a role on any coaching staff within the Mariners organization but he’s served as a special assignment coordinator for the Mariners in Spring Training.
The Mariners depart from Scott Servais, while the team is still in the playoff race. Although, their chances are hanging in the balance. They turned a 10 game AL West lead into a five game deficit. Servais, 57, was in the midst of his ninth season as the Mariners skipper. Since 2016, he has compiled a record of 680-642 record (.514 winning percentage). Though, he led them to the franchises lone postseason appearance in 2022. The team then missed the playoffs in 2023.
Wilson comes with a strong connection to the franchise. Especially, to the glory days of Mariners baseball. He served at the Mariners catcher from 1994 to 2005. Wilson has built a strong relationship with current Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh. The former Mariner has also served as a broadcast analyst for ROOT Sports.
According to Adam Jude with the Seattle Times, Edgar Martinez will be joining the Mariners coaching staff as well. The capacity is unclear, but he’ll be on the staff for the rest of the season. This will be Edgars second coaching stint with the Mariners. He previously served as the Mariners hitting coach from 2015-18.
The news on Scott Servais is now official and according to Daniel Kramer, the Mariners have also fired Jarett DeHart.
“We believe that we need a new voice in the clubhouse,” Dipoto said. “Dan knows our team and has been a key member of our organization working with players at every level over the past 11 years. He is well respected within and outside of our clubhouse.”
