The Seattle Mariners have set some bigger goals for the 2023 season. Last year, it was about ending the playoff drought… this season they want to extend that and maybe not only win the World Series but make their first World Series in franchise history. It’s a big goal, but they may have the team to do it. Though, they are now placing a former Cy Young award winner, Robbie Ray on the 15-day IL with a flexor strain.
Ray served to be one of the most dominant starters in Spring Training posting a 1.06 ERA over 17 innings. However, he didn’t look as sharp in his first outing of the regular season.
The Mariners were able to hold on to both Chris Flexen and Marco Gonzales this offseason. After some early reports stated one of the two may likely be traded. Good thing they kept both as it appears, Flexen may transition to the rotation until Ray is able to come back.
Nonetheless, the injury will still serve as a blow to the team. Ray has been a leader on and off the field since his arrival in Seattle. Losing a guy with the caliber of Robbie Ray to the IL might sting a bit. Ray and the Mariners were hoping for a bounce-back season after Ray’s ERA dipped to 3.87 in 2022.
Robbie Ray developed a new pitch during the off-season after only having a two-pitch repertoire the past two seasons.
“I know he’s been working on a new pitch. He came to camp and he’s working on a split, as is Logan Gilbert,” Dipoto said. “And both of them, I will say – (I’ve seen) Logan’s on film and Robbie’s live – both of them look like they’ve put in the work on it. They’re good-looking pitches while still in the development stage.”
In a corresponding move, the Seattle Mariners have recalled LHP Gabe Speier. Speier has appeared in 4 Major League seasons all with Kansas City, pitching to 0-2 record with a 3.83 ERA across 41 appearances.
More to come.
