The Seattle Mariners are in agreement on a trade with the San Francisco Giants. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mariners will send former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to the Giants in exchange for former Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger and right-hander Anthony Desclafani.
The Mariners will roughly lose about $3 Million after the trade, but still have roughly $18-$25 million that they could spend to match the books from last season.
Ray is coming off Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss half the season. He’s expected to be back after the all-star break and can opt-out after the 2024 season. With the emergence of the Mariners young pitchers, Ray had become expendable.
“I do want to thank Robbie for his time in Seattle, stated president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto in the official announcement. “On the field and in the clubhouse, he was a key part of taking us to the postseason in 2022 and in allowing us to remain in the race down to the final days in 2023. He provided leadership to our young pitchers that will be felt here for years to come. We wish he and his family nothing but the best in San Francisco.”
The deal to bring Haniger back in makes a lot of sense for the Mariners. He was a fan favorite and a locker room leader who the front office didn’t want to get rid of. Across five seasons in Seattle, Haniger hit .263/.337/.480 with 306 home runs. He’s a guy that is very disciplined at the plate. The only problem is that he struggles to stay healthy. There may be a solution to that, the Mariners have been looking to find a right-handed bat that they could platoon with one of their lefties.
“As we continue to build out our team for 2024 and beyond, we feel this trade accomplishes a couple of our objectives. In Mitch, we get a player we know well, and hold in very high regard, as another piece for our outfield, while Anthony – who can start or pitch out of the ‘pen – gives us depth in our pitching staff. And the deal allows us to put the best team possible on the field from Opening Day on.”
Maybe Mariners fans will remember the letter that he wrote to the Seattle fans. The Mariners went on to do exactly what the letter said they would do. End the drought.
That’s not the only trade that the Mariners will make. According to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic, the Mariners will send INF Jose Caballero in exchange for OF Luke Raley.
Even with these two trades, the Mariners may not be done. The addition of Luke Raley gives them four left-handed hitting outfielders: Dominic Canzone, Cade Marlowe, Raley and Taylor Trammell. They could likely look to move one or two of those. As of now, the latter trade also leaves the Mariners with just Josh Rojas at second base. According to Jeff Passan, the Raley-Caballero trade is now official.
