The Seattle Mariners are trading Eugenio Suarez to the Arizona Diamonbacks. Mark Feisand was the first to report the trade.
The Mariners are reportedly receiving C Seby Zavala and RHP Carlos Vargas in exchange. However, not a necessity for a team that is pushing to make the playoffs. So you could only imagine that they must have more moves in store.
Suarez had become a fan favorite in Seattle. His “Good Vibes Only” catchphrase caught in with the locker room and the fans. The Mariners want to reduce the number of strikeouts in their lineup though and Suarez is a contributor to that. In 2023, Suarez had a down year at the plate, posted a .232/.323./.391 slash line with 28 doubles, 22 homers, 96 RBI and 214 strikeouts while playing in all 162 games. Suarez was a key member of the roster that broke the Mariners playoff drought. The dip in power and bat speed was enough of a concern for Seattle.
Besides reducing the number of strikeouts, the Mariners also take a larger salary off the payroll. Suarez is set to make $11 million in the last remaining guaranteed year in his contract.
Zavala, 30, will serve as a backup catcher to Cal Raleigh next season. He has a career slash line of .210/.275/.347 through 176 MLB games.
Vargas, who will turn 24 in March, is a hard-throwing right-hander with a fastball that touches 100 mph. He made five relief appearances for Arizona as a rookie in 2023, posting a 5.79 ERA with seven strikeouts and four walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Eugenio Suarez will join an Arizona team that reached the World Series in 2023. Adding veteran leadership and a power bat that could help a young roster.
