After moving Jazz Chisholm on Saturday night, the Miami Marlins have decided to waive Josh Bell according to Robert Murray. There have been no indications that the Marlins plan to remove him from their roster. It’s likely that it could be similar to the Kevin Kiermaier situation.
If no team claims Bell off waivers, the Marlins could choose to send him to the minors or trade him. Though, Bell has enough service time that he could reject a minor league assignment. Though its hard to believe that Bell would clear waivers with how many teams are looking at a first baseman/ designated hitter.
Bell, 31, has had some good seasons in his career. He has been trending downward as of late. Bell signed a two-year deal with the Cleveland Guardians last season. He was traded to the Marlins at the the deadline a season ago. With Jean Segura and Kahlil Watson going back to Cleveland. His reults improved after the trade as he hit .270/.338/.480 for a wRC+ of 119 and Josh Bell helped the Marlins get into the playoffs.
Those results haven’t really transferred over, but Bell is still hitting a respectable .239/.303/.396 with 18 doubles, a triple and 14 home runs. He’s also striking out at 22% clip which is below the league average. It’s likely that Bell would just be a rental, but if anyone claims him on waivers then it wouldn’t cost much.
The Yankees, Astros and Mariners all have a need at the first base and designated hitter positions. The Astros had signed Jose Abreu prior to the 2024 campaign. That didn’t quite work out the way they wanted and they later waived him. The Mariners have been active at the deadline attempting to fix their struggling offense. They have waived Ty France and added Randy Arozarena. While, the Yankees are also looking to add to their lineup. All three teams have had interest in Yandy Diaz.
