Goaltender Martin Jones signed a one year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs this Wednesday. The contract gives the 33 year old $875,000 next season. The veteran netminder is entering his 11th season in the NHL, and will be vying for time in a competitive goalkeeper squad in Toronto.
Martin Jones started his career as a member of the Los Angeles Kings. His rookie year in the NHL, Jones went 12-6-0, and the Kings would go on to win the Stanley Cup. After two years in Los Angeles, Jones would spend the next 6 seasons as a San Jose Shark. In his best statistical year as a starting goalie, Jones had a 2.27 goals against average and a save percentage of .918. The Sharks would also go on to win the Western Conference Championship that season, but fall in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Pittsburgh Penguins. After San Jose, Jones spent one year as a Philadelphia Flyer. Then, last season, Jones was a backup goaltender for the Seattle Kraken. Over his career, Jones has a record of 225-163-35, a save percentage of .905, and a goals against average of 2.71.
Martin Jones will be joining a solid goaltending squad in Toronto. Last year, Ilya Samsonov was the starting netminder and the backup roll went to young upcomer Joseph Woll. Matt Murray has also been a member of the Maple Leafs since July 11th, 2022. However, Murray has been on long term injured reserve since late July last year.
The Maple Leafs ended last season with an overall record of 50-21-11. Their combined 111 points placed them 2nd in the Atlantic Division. Toronto would eliminate the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This was the first playoff series the Maple Leafs had won since 2004. The Maple Leafs season would end in a 4-1 series loss to the Florida Panthers in the second round.
With the signing of Jones, along with a handful of other free agents, the Maple Leafs look to make another run at the Stanley Cup this year.
