The Mavs Don’t Have the Best Duo in NBA History, Sorry Paul Pierce

Mavs Duo

(Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports)

There’s often a debate about who is the best player in NBA history. One that doesn’t happen often is the debate of the best duo. We’re talking duos such as Kobe Bryant & Shaquille O’Neal, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan or even Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. When you look at back at history, there are lot of duos that could be labeled as the best. The Mavs duo (Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic) would probably not even make the top five.

On an episode of Undisputed earlier this week, Paul Pierce made the bold statement to say that they were.

You can’t make this stuff up. It’s ridiculous that we’re even considering this Mavs “dynamic” duo to be one of the best in history. This is the second season that they’ve been together. They have no championships (yet). Not to mention, the Mavs missed the playoffs in 2023. At this point, it’s ludicrous. They’re not even the greatest offensive backcourt in NBA history. If you’re talking about just offensive ones, you could throw duos like the Splash Bros (Steph and Klay), Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum could be in that mix as well. We’re also talking about duos like Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook and many others.

“I said this a month ago on this show: That this is the best offensive duo (not backcourt). Offensive duo. In NBA history.”

Let’s give them a little bit of credit. The Mavs have done an incredible job of bouncing back after missing the playoffs last year. They ended the season with a 50-32 record and finished fifth in the West. They defeated both the Los Angeles Clippers and a young up-and-coming Oklahoma City Thunder team. Nothing they’ve done yet though, screams that the Mavs duo is the best in NBA history. There are a lot of duos that could be listed above this one.
