Max Scherzer is facing a 10 game suspension after being ejected from yesterday’s game for use of illegal foreign substances while pitching. The veteran starting pitcher was tossed in the third inning of yesterday’s game against the Dodgers after multiple checks. After pleading with umpires that he was just using rosin, which is legal, he was ejected. Each ejection for foreign substances is followed by an automatic 10-game suspension.
The “sticky stuff” crackdown came in the middle of the 2021 season, which states pitchers are only allowed to use sweat and rosin to get a grip on the ball. Since the breakdown, there have been only three ejections for pitchers who have been caught using some sort of foreign substance. This includes Max Scherzer. The umpire who ejected Scherzer yesterday, Phil Cuzzie, was responsible for ejecting the other two pitchers.
Scherzer: “I’d have to be an absolute idiot…”
After the game, Scherzer did not hold back stating how careful he was to follow the guidelines of the rule. Max went on to say “I’d have to be an absolute idiot to try to do anything coming out for the fourth inning”. This is referring to the multiple checks Scherzer went through during the game prior to his ejection.
This incident comes only days after Yankees starting pitcher, Domingo German, got only a warning for the same offense. Like Scherzer, German was asked to simply wash his hands and was able to stay in the game. Much to the dismay of Twins manager, Rocco Baldelli, who was later ejected for arguing the lack of rule enforcement from the umpires. It’s unsure why German was able to continue pitching while Scherzer is now facing suspension for it.
Max Scherzer is more than likely going to appeal this suspension in the coming days. For now, the Mets have lost their ace for the next 10 games.
