Kylian Mbappe opened up recently in an interview with L’Equipe and provided more details in regards to his future and what exactly happened over the summer between him and his current club, Paris Saint-Germain.
It has been no secret that the star French forward, 22, has had his eyes on leaving PSG for quite some time to sign for Spanish giants Real Madrid. But as a surprise to many, including Mbappe himself, the move was never finalized. And as far as we know, the move was never seriously considered by PSG.
Speaking to the French newspaper, Mbappe said: “I thought that my adventure [with PSG] was over. I wanted to discover something else. I’d been in the French league six or seven years. I’ve given what I tried to at Paris and I think I’ve done it well.”
Mbappe clarified he approached PSG in July, confirming his intentions to leave and to not renew his contract. Despite reports that the striker waited till last minute of the summer transfer window to state his intentions, Mbappe remained firm. “Personally, I did not appreciate the idea that, ‘Yes, he came in the final week of August,’ because that makes me sound like a thief. I said at the end of July I wanted to leave.”
When asked about where his desire to play was from over the summer, he answered: “If I had left this summer, it would have only been for Real [Madrid].”
Real Madrid Hints Future
Real Madrid had sent multiple bids to PSG over the summer to sign Mbappe, but each and every bid was not only rejected, but ignored.
Even when each bid increased, starting from €160m, to €180m, and then finally €200m, PSG remained silent on the matter.
Speaking on Tuesday, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez slightly spoke about the situation. “We hope that on Jan. 1 everything can be resolved,” referring to the date when Mbappe is free to sign with a new club. He also stressed: “…we have to wait until next year … always with respect to PSG with whom we have good relations.”
Until then, Mbappe will have to continue to work alongside the likes of Neymar and Lionel Messi while staying at PSG. Unless something changes, he will become a free agent next summer.
