Michael Jordan is selling the Charlotte Hornets. However, that doesn’t mean he’s willing to step back during the selling process. General Manager of the Hornets Mitch Kupchak confirmed with reporters that the decision will go through Jordan himself before the final selection. The Hornets currently hold the second pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
This comes after news broke that Jordan would be selling his majority ownership with the team. After 13 years of what was at best mediocrity, the move has raised some eyebrows. Charlotte went 423-600 in his with Jordan running the team. It’s the 26th-best record out of those 13 seasons. Also, during that time, the Hornets haven’t won a playoff series and their last postseason appearance was seven years ago.
Jordan does plan on keeping a minority ownership for a team he but in 2010 for $275 million then known as the Charlotte Bobcats. Currently, the franchise is valued at around $3 billion, an obvious sharp increase from when he bought them despite never contending.
The Hornets are looking at either Scoot Henderson or Brandon Miller with the second pick and are reportedly leaning towards Miller. Michael Jordan was consistently criticized for his moves as the Hornets owner for obvious reasons. It’ll be interesting to see if he can leave behind an actual gift to the city of Charlotte or another disappointment. But for those fans that doubt him, fear not, as Kupchak did clarify it’s not solely Jordan’s decision.
“He’s always, at the end of the day, deferred to me,” Kupchak said. “I can’t think of too many times that we weren’t on the same page.”
But the unfortunate thing is if that’s been the strategy historically, the odds aren’t in their favor.
