Dylan Cease

As we get closer to Opening Day, more teams are being pulled into the Dylan Cease trade rumors. Each team has different reasons why, but for each of them they share the same need. A quality starting pitcher who can go deep in games. On Wednesday morning, Jon Morosi reported that the trade talks are heating up and three teams are involved.

Tuesday night, the rumors of the Rangers and Yankees started heating up. The Padres were added to the talks as well. By now, it’s been well merited what it will take to acquire the services. Cease is an affordable ($8M) right-hander with two years of team control remaining. He demonstrated his upside in 2022 when he finished second in the Cy Young Award rankings. The 2023 season was not as kind to him however as he finished with 4.58 ERA with slightly diminished (but still far better than average) strikeout and velocity numbers.

New York Yankees

The Yankees traded away some of their pitching depth to acquire Juan Soto this offseason. With the injury to Gerrit Cole, he’s expected to be out at least a month. However, it could be longer depending on the severity. They were linked to some of the top names all offseason and they could likely sign or trade for someone like Dylan Cease by the start of the season.

Texas Rangers

The Rangers are coming off of a World Series win. However, they need another durable starter in their rotation. As of now, they have a solid four-man rotation. Health could be an issue however and the Rangers don’t have top-tier depth if it does.

San Diego Padres

A late addition to the trade rumors for Dylan Cease. If it were talking about a pure fit, the Friars make the most sense. It appears that the Padres were looking to financially reset in the offseason and take some money off the books. They’re also not in the midst of a rebuild with how the roster is constructed. They have looked to give the younger guys a shot this spring, but none of them have really stood out. They have a clear cut rotation of Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove and Michael King. Adding Cease would make that a solid top four, then they’d only have the battle for the fifth spot.
