Napoli vs Juventus Match Reaction

Napoli and Juventus clashed in the blockbuster fixture of match day 18 of the Seria A campaign. The home team had the possibility to go ten points clear if they came out victorious while Juve could close the gap to four points if they got all three points.

1st Half

It was a relatively even start to the game. Both teams were getting a feel for the match and growing into their tactical roles as the game went on.

The first chance of the match fell to Victor Osimhen in the 13th minute. He lost his marker, Bremer, but couldn’t beat Szczęsny at his near post.

Soon after, the Nigerian striker had another chance, and this time, he converted. Politano played in a cross which found Kvaratskhelia. He hit a half volley which was parried by Szczęsny and Osimhen was there to head home the rebound. 1-0 Napoli.

Twenty minutes into the game, Kim-Min Jae’s misplaced pass fell to World Cup winner Angel Di Maria. He worked a shooting angle from about 20 yards out but his attempt rocked the crossbar.

Juve continued to knock on the door and Milik had their next chance. Di Maria found a pocket of space on the left flank, whipped a cross onto Milik’s head, but his header was easily saved by Meret.

Against the run of play, Kvaratskhelia doubled the scoring on minute 38. Osimhen made another deep run but the ball was partially cut out by Bremer. The striker showed great anticipation and won the ball back, squared it to his partner in crime and the Georgian slotted it home.

Juventus’ best player on the pitch pulled one back three minutes after Napoli’s second. After a nice 1,2 sequence with Locatelli outside the box, the ball fell to Milik. He set up his teammate who calmly found the bottom left corner.

Seconds before the referee blew for half time, Chiesa whipped in a venomous cross which took a massive deflection off Rrahmani and Meret showed great reaction to save his defender’s blushes.

“The Old Lady” went into the locker room behind, but on the ascendancy and knowing what was required to get something out of this game. Napoli knew that they needed to score more goals cause Juve weren’t going to make it easy for them.

2nd Half

Rrahmani restored his team’s two goal lead in the 55th minute. Kvicha’s corner wasn’t dealt with by Juventus’ defenders and the Kosovan center back thumped it into Szczęsny’s net.

Osimhen guaranteed his team all three points in the 65th minute . Mario Rui successfully pressed Bremer and the ball fell to the feet of the Georgian magician. He saw his striker making a run, found him and the Nigerian guided the ball into the net.

Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia linked up again but this time, Szczęsny saved Kvicha’s shot.

In the 71st minute, the substitute Elmas scored the fifth of the night. Di Lorenzo found him on the right flank, he beat Kostic with his first touch and powered it into the bottom left corner.

Business as Usual

In the end, the better team won. They fought for and won all the 50/50s. Created quality chances and moved the ball with intent. This was a statement win and Milan, Inter and Juventus know that they must keep winning if they are to have any chance at this Scudetto.
