Cody Ware

Cody Ware has been reinstated by NASCAR after being suspended for much of the 2023 season. NASCAR handed down the indefinite suspension in April after Ware was arrested on a felony charge of “assault by strangulation — inflict serious injury” and a misdemeanor charge of “assault on female.” The charges were filed following an altercation with Ware’s then-girlfriend in North Carolina. His girlfriend was also charged with “simple assault” in connection with the incident.

On Thursday, officials with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office dismissed the charges against Ware. On Tuesday, NASCAR made the move to lift his indefinite suspension once he was no longer facing charges. As part of the dismissal filings, lawyers are also dismissing civil suits brought by Ware’s family against his now ex-girlfriend. Ware will be allowed to race full time in NASCAR again in 2024.

Following his reinstatement Ware released a statement proclaiming his innocence and criticizing those who rushed to judgment. The driver also expressed gratitude to have the charges dismissed saying he is “thankful” to have his life back. It should also be noted that Ware has been vocal about his struggles with mental health issues as well as anxiety and depression.

Cody Ware’s Career

Ware began racing in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2017 and regularly drives the No. 51 car for Rick Ware Racing, a team owned by his father. Following his suspension, several other drivers climbed behind the wheel of the car with the most notable replacement being 18-time Cup Series winner Ryan Newman.

Cody Ware has started 97 races in his career. His best finish was sixth in the August 2022 race at Daytona International Speedway. It’s unclear where Ware will race in 2024. Rick Ware Racing announced Justin Haley will be driving one of its cars full time next season.
