NBA Scouting

For years, the NBA has been adamant on scouting high school players. It appears they may be loosening their rules, however. On Tuesday, it was reported the NBA would allow teams to scout a series of high school events throughout the 2023-24 season.

Givony explained that the series will begin with Nike EYBL Scholastic Showcase Games in Las Vegas later this week. Since 2005, the NBA has prohibited its clubs from contacting high school ball players. They had implemented the one-and-done rule, where draft prospects must play at least one year of college or overseas. Over the past couple of seasons, with the G-League Ignite, high school graduates have been able to play against NBA-level talent.

Numerous players in the NBA now have opted not to play competitive basketball during the year after high school. Two have which have been very successful in their young careers, Shaedon Sharpe and Darius Bazley. While, James Wiseman and Darius Garland played limited action in their lone collegiate seasons due to an injury or eligibility issues.

Being able to scout prospects in high school could be beneficial as it will give NBA teams more information to base their evaluations on once they become draft-eligible. The event this week takes place in Vegas, where NBA Teams will be for the final four of the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament. It will feature prospects like Cooper Flagg and Tre Johnson.

Below is a list of all the events that the NBA has allowed Scouting trips to:

  • Nike EYBL Scholastic Showcase Games (Dec. 8-9 in Las Vegas, NV)
  • Sunshine Prep Showcase at IMG Academy (Dec. 14-17 in Bradenton, FL)
  • Tarkanian Classic (Dec. 15-21 in Las Vegas, NV)
  • City of Palms Classic (Dec. 18-23 in Fort Myers, FL)
  • HoopHall Classic (Jan. 11-15, Springfield, MA)
  • Throne National Championship (March 28-31 in New York City, NY)
  • High School Boys Basketball Nationals (April 4-6 in Brownsburg, IN)
