The NBA is one step closer to making the draft a two-day event. Earlier this season, they had discussed the likelihood of it and it appears to be coming.
For years, the extravaganza of the NBA Draft has made for a long night with both the first and second rounds. Right now is still scheduled as a one-day event on June 27. Literally, just four days after a potential game seven of the NBA finals. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA is preparing to make the 2024 draft a two-day event on June 26-27 in Brooklyn.
For many reasons, the concept may be a good idea:
A – It would allow for more time per pick. Team executives believe they could benefit from this. It would allow for more time to decide if a player fits the system. Maybe more time to decide if a player will be a bust or a star in the league. The values for draft capital increase yearly, so its crucial for a team who plans to make that pick to select the right player for their organization. Currently, the NBA allows five minutes per pick in the first round and two minutes in the second round.
B – Sleepers may be easier to find. The second round of the draft has become about finding sleepers. With an additional day there will be more emphasis on that.
C – Capitalizing on the audience. Record-breaking numbers are good. In 2023, the NBA Draft averaged an audience that was up 23% from 2022. With the draft audience peaking around the 8 P.M. hour. The hope of switching to a two-day event is that the audience will stay interested and increase views.
The last reason also becomes the biggest downfall in making the NBA Draft a two-day event. Fans may lose interest on the second day.
