Wednesday’s edition of NHL rumors will include the latest from the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, and Edmonton Oilers.
Edmonton Oilers – Players Who Could Be Moved
Rumor: Per Jonathan Bernier – tvasports.ca. If new new Montreal Canadiens front office addition Jeff Gorton decided to do a rebuild, he may choose from a list of ten players who could find new homes.
Analysis: The list includes some really decent hockey players. Included are: Carey Price, Shea Weber, Jeff Petry, Brendan Gallagher, Nick Suzuki, Josh Anderson, Christian Dvorak, Joel Armia, Jake Evans and David Savard.
It’s certain to put a surprised look on most Canadiens’ fans faces. Someone like Dvorak who was just acquired seems to be one of those surprises. Then, there are the obvious ones like Price, Petry, Gallagher, Suzuki, and Anderson.
Not that all of these guys will be leaving, but such a list certainly makes one wonder who will be left in Montreal? If another team could even afford Price’s eight-year $94 million deal is another question. Of course, after this season’s huge $13 million payout, his base salary averages out at only $7.81 million a year. Pocket change.
Needless to say, if Gorton decides to rebuild, he will have some tough decisions to make.
Vancouver Canucks – Bergiven Being Considered as New GM?
Rumor: Per Ryan Kennedy – hockeynews.com. The Vancouver Canucks cleaned house removing head coach Travis Green and general manager Jim Benning. Bruce Boudreau is in behind the bench, and the GM spot is yet to be filled. Bergevin compiled a 344-265-81 record throughout his nine years at the helm, including one trip to the Eastern Conference final in 2014 and a Stanley Cup final appearance this past season.
Analysis: Even though Marc Bergevin had a good record in his tenure, he also had some disappointments. During his reign, the Habs finished fifth three times and missed the playoffs three times as well. The only reason the Montreal club made the playoffs last season was due to the COVID shortened season and allowing 24 teams to qualify.
Bergevin could be considered, but he may not even be interested in taking on the Canucks. Time will tell, so stay focused on NHL rumors right here on CSM.
Edmonton Oilers – Brendan Perlini Waived
Rumor: Per Edmonton Oilers. Perlini who played really well in the preseason, has literally done nothing to keep him in the NHL ranks this season. With no points in 13 games and just six shots on goal, he may be stuck in the AHL for a bit.
Analysis: Brendan Perlini has just not developed into a player who was drafted 12th overall in 2014. He does have 45 goals in 199 NHL games, but perhaps he needs more ice time in the AHL. He was only getting 7:33 minutes of ice time with the Oilers.
It’s possible that some team will claim Perlini, but his lack of production makes that a long shot. If you’re into sports betting, he wouldn’t be a top bet to be picked up. While he has potential, he lacks the ability to finish plays and that just doesn’t work in the NHL.
