There have been a lot of rumors going around the NHL lately; will Patrick Kane move on, and if so, will the New Jersey Devils snag him? Will the Edmonton Oilers be stuck with Jesse Puljujarvi? Are the Vancouver Canucks going to trade Brock Boeser? Let’s dive in.
Edmonton Oilers
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the Edmonton Oilers are considering trading Jesse Puljujarvi to give him a fresh start elsewhere. The 24-year-old winger has been struggling indefinitely this season, scoring only one goal in his 28 games. On Friday, Puljujarvi hardly played during the Oilers’ win over Minnesota.
“Twenty games in and I have one goal. It’s sad,” Puljujarvi said. “I’ve been thinking a lot how to do things differently. Right now, I just don’t have the answer. … I’m trying to find out who I am as a player, since it looks like I don’t fit anywhere here (in Edmonton).”
The Finnish hockey player is having trouble connecting on the ice. “Of course, I’d like to be a productive top-line player,” he said. “But right now, it looks like I can’t do that in the NHL. Maybe some other league.” But it’s only a matter of time to see where Puljujarvi will stand in the NHL or if he will even continue to play in the NHL.
New Jersey Devils
In the wake of the New Jersey Devils’ game against the New York Islanders, Jack Hughes‘ 6:02 shift has prompted speculation about their trade deadline plans, and there is a possibility Patrick Kane could be in the mix of it. NHL.com senior writer Dan Rosen spoke on his insights regarding Kane.
“To make it work, they would almost certainly have to give up their first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a top prospect in the ballpark of forward Alexander Holtz,” Rosen said. “The Blackhawks should ask for forward Dawson Mercer, a 21-year-old who could be a big part of their future core much the same way he is in New Jersey. He shouldn’t be off the table if the Devils think they have a real shot at the Stanley Cup this season.”
Although, it would be cool to see Hughes and Kane play together on the ice, and they could do some damage. However, if the Devils want to sign Kane, they will have to trade some other guys on the team to afford him.
Vancouver Canucks
Brock Boeser has been linked to several NHL teams over the past week, and rumors are spurring. There has been no end to trade rumors since last weekend’s report that Brock Boeser’s agent has been allowed to speak with other teams about a trade. Although a trade doesn’t seem close, he is the subject of much media speculation.
According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Boeser’s agent, Ben Hankinson, had already spoken to six clubs by Tuesday and would still do so. It’s possible that those six teams could be the Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Stars seem to be looking for a top-six forward. Minnesota does have cap issues due to 14.74 million dollars in dead money for the following season and the year, but Boeser could bring them more goals. The Devils are just starting to get hot this season, and adding Boeser could be a great addition. Additionally, they would have to distribute salaries. Both the New York Islanders and Rangers are looking for another goal scorer. Pittsburgh would also need to send salaries and get rid of certain players.
The 6.65 million dollar cap hit for Boeser through 2024–25 is a significant issue. LeBrun claimed that the teams interested in the winger but with whom he has spoken do not have the cap room to sign him. By trading Boeser, the Canucks expect to clear some cap space. Nevertheless, it depends on what else is contained in return and whether they accept a contract that could be ending.
