The Chicago Blackhawks have locked up 36-year-old Nick Foligno for the next couple of years, signing him to a two-year, $9 million extension Friday. He will carry a cap hit of $4.5 million in 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Foligno was scheduled to hit free agency at the end of the season after signing a one-year, $4 million contract with Chicago in the summer of 2023. He is in his first year with Chicago, spending the previous two seasons with the Boston Bruins. Foligno will receive $1.4 million more than the Bruins signed him for in 2021. Boston gave Foligno a two-year, $7.6 million deal that ran through the 2022-23 season.

Nick Foligno has played in 39 games with the Blackhawks this season. He is currently on the injured reserve list after suffering a fractured left finger last week in a game against the New Jersey Devils. Foligno has eight goals and nine assists in 2023-24.

Blackhawks General Manager On Foligno’s Extension

“The impact Nick has already had on our team in such a short time is a testament to his work ethic and dedication to helping the players around him succeed,” said Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson in a statement. “Hard-working on the ice, the energy he brings every night and his versatility to play in any situation have been tremendous assets. His leadership skills both on and off the ice have been instrumental in what we are building, and we are excited for him continue to push our team forward.”

Foligno is in his 17th season in the league. He was drafted 28th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2006 NHL Draft. He spent his first five seasons with the Senators before signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2012. Foligno played parts of nine seasons with the Blue Jackets, winning the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award and King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2017.

Foligno has played 1,120 regular season games in his career, scoring 223 goals and collecting 319 assists. Despite his age, Foligno is on pace for over 30 points, which would be his highest point total in a season since he had 31 in 2019-20.
