Nick Suzuki Signs Extension

Nick Suzuki has signed a contract extension with the Montreal Canadiens. The contract is for 8 years and has a $7.875 million AAV, according to multiple sources. It reportedly also carries a 10-team no-trade list, according to Chris Johnston. The deal is set to kick in after this season, tying Suzuki to the Habs through the 2029-2030 NHL season.

Suzuki was a first round pick of the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 draft, 13th overall. Before he could play a game for the Knights, Suzuki was traded to Montreal for established sniper Max Pacioretty. Since establishing himself full-time in the NHL, Suzuki has been dynamite. He has scored 82 points in 127 regular-season games, as well as 23 points in 32 playoff games.

This is a tidy piece of business for Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin. It locks up a franchise cornerstone long-term, and at a reasonable price to boot. On top of that, Bergevin was able to negotiate the contract to start after this season. The Canadiens are spending right to the cap this year (technically over), and would not have space for the new deal. Montreal kicks off its 2021-22 season on October 13 vs the Toronto Maple Leafs.
