Free Agency has officially begun, the GM meetings are over. The Los Angeles Angels are the second team to make a big splash in free agency as they have officially inked a deal with Noah Syndergaard.

Interesting Choice vs Good Choice

Noah Syndergaard has only pitched 2 innings over the last two innings, which makes this a very interesting choice for a Los Angeles Angels team that is looking to get better and potentially claim the AL West next season. The price of that contract is pretty hefty though it’s just a one-year deal.

The 29-year-old Syndergaard has spent his first seven seasons in New York with the Mets, making one All-Star team and displaying perhaps the nastiest array of pitches for a starter in the major leagues. From 2015 to 2019, Syndergaard was one of the most dominant pitchers in the MLB. Over 718 career innings, he has a 3.32 ERA and has struck out 777, walked 166, and allowed just 64 home runs. But in 2021, when he returned from Tommy John surgery, he looked inconsistent. He picked up the loss by throwing two innings. In those two innings, he gave up three hits, struck out two batters but gave up two runs as well.

There were many teams interested in Syndergaard including the Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Yankees.

Whether or not he can return to an ace-like pitcher is yet to be determined, but either way, Syndergaard will join the same Angels rotation that already features Japanese sensation, Shohei Ohtani. Both pitchers have electric stuff.

The career numbers were enough for the Angels to make the choice. A choice that is interesting right now, but Syndergaard could now be part of one of the best rotations in baseball.
