If you can believe it, the 2024 ATP season has already begun. After a quick offseason, players are gearing up for a long, grueling season ahead. It can be especially tough for an ATP top 10 player, as they are constantly reaching the later stages of tournaments, which means they play more matches and have fewer days off. They will not see many extended breaks from now until the end of November when the tennis season finally finishes.
For some of the top 10 ATP players, they will just be hoping to stay there by the end of the year. For others, staying in the top 10 in the ATP rankings is too small a goal, as they have their eyes set on winning all the Grand Slams and possibly an Olympic gold medal.
Here is one goal for each ATP top 10 player for 2024.
10. Taylor Fritz – A Grand Slam Semifinal
Taylor Fritz has won his fair share of ATP Tour titles but has not been able to replicate that success at the Grand Slams. His goal in 2024 should be to advance to his first Grand Slam semifinal.
Fritz has been to the quarterfinals of a major twice in his career. The first came at Wimbledon in 2022, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. The second time was at the US Open in 2023, where he fell to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
9. Hubert Hurkacz – Consistency At The Majors
Hubert Hurkacz is an elite player in the ATP Tour top 10. When his serve is on, it is incredibly tough to play him. However, he has struggled to be consistent at the world’s best events.
Hurkacz had multiple fourth-round losses, a third-round loss, and a second-round loss at the Grand Slams last year. For a player of his caliber, he should be getting into the second week at every major. To start, he needs to reach the quarterfinals at a major for the first time since Wimbledon in 2021.
8. Holger Rune – Reach Australian Open & US Open Quarterfinals
Holger Rune is already on his way to becoming one of the best players on tour. He is currently just 20 years old and has a career-high ranking of number four.
Rune’s goal this season should be to reach the quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and US Open. With quarterfinal appearances at the other two majors and a Masters 1000 title under his belt, reaching the quarterfinals in Australia and New York is something he is more than capable of doing.
7. Alexander Zverev – Another Grand Slam Final
Alexander Zverev has accomplished a lot at just 26 years old. One thing that is missing from his resume, though, is a Grand Slam title.
Zverev reached his lone major final in 2020, losing to Dominic Thiem in the tightest of five-setters. After having a full year back from a significant injury, Zverev should be as motivated as ever to reach another Grand Slam final. His best chances to do that will come at the French Open and the US Open.
6. Stefanos Tsitsipas – Win Three ATP Titles
For someone as talented as Stefanos Tsitsipas, he should have more than one ATP title in a season. In 2023, Tsitsipas won just once on tour, which came at the Mifel Tennis Open.
Tsitsipas has won three ATP titles in a calendar year just once in his career, which came in 2019. He will give himself lots of opportunities by making it deep into tournaments, but he will need to raise his level in the semifinals and finals if he is going to win. Tsitsipas has just 10 titles in 27 finals played.
5. Andrey Rublev – Win A Major Quarterfinal Match
Andrey Rublev made three Grand Slam quarterfinals in 2023, the most in his career. The only problem is that Rublev is 0-9 in Grand Slam quarterfinals.
With many players behind him having already reached Grand Slam semifinals and finals, he must find a way to get past the quarterfinals. Rublev has proven he can do it at the lower-level tournaments, but it is a lot different having to do it at one of the four majors.
4. Jannik Sinner – Win A Grand Slam
For Jannik Sinner, the goal is simple. He has won ATP 250 titles, ATP 500 titles, and a Masters 1000, but now he must go after the Grand Slams.
The 22-year-old Italian had an incredible end to the season in 2023. After the US Open, Sinner won Beijing and Vienna, made the final of the ATP Finals, and then led Italy to a Davis Cup title. With all this momentum, we should expect big things from Sinner at the Grand Slams in 2024.
3. Daniil Medvedev – Get Back To World Number One
Daniil Medvedev was one of the three best players in the world last season. With all the talk surrounding Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, Medvedev proved he is still someone to watch out for.
To make certain nobody forgets about him, Medvedev should be motivated to get back to world number one. It is a tall task with Djokovic and Alcaraz ahead of him, but with few points to defend in Australia, a big run could close the gap quickly.
2. Carlos Alcaraz – A Fully Healthy Season
A fully healthy season from Carlos Alcaraz would be the scariest thing for his competition. Alcaraz is on his way to becoming one of the all-time greats, as long as his body can hold on for the ride.
Alcaraz will add to his Grand Slam total if he can play at all four majors. The 20-year-old Spaniard already has two majors; if he remains in peak shape throughout the year, he has a good chance of doubling that total by the end of 2024.
1. Novak Djokovic – An Olympic Gold Medal
What could Novak Djokovic possibly have left to accomplish? The answer is an Olympic gold medal, the one thing Djokovic has yet to win in his career.
2024 could be Djokovic’s last chance to win gold at the Olympics since he will be in his 40s by the time the next one comes around. I am sure that he is motivated to win all four Grand Slams, but he will be especially locked in when it comes to the Olympics, knowing that he is a gold medal away from accomplishing everything there is to accomplish in the sport.
