Oregon Ducks – Quarterback Room

The Oregon Ducks have some decisions to make at Quarterback, for the future, and for the present. After last season, the Ducks saw Tyler Shough transfer to Texas Tech. But even without the loss of Shough, the Ducks still have six quarterbacks. Three of these quarterbacks are former 4-star recruits and a 5-star recruit. While you also have a 3-star transfer in Anthony Brown.

Who’s in the Room?

Anthony Brown

Back for his senior year, the starting QB spot is his to lose. Brown appeared in the final two games for the Ducks this past season, and he saw some extended action in the Fiesta Bowl, playing a majority of the later second quarter and a majority of the second half. In a full season with an opened-up Playbook, Brown will look to lead the Ducks to an elite bowl game and possibly even the College Football Playoff.

Jay Butterfield

“I feel like my game is definitely a little different from the other guys,” Butterfield said. “They’re a little faster and more athletic and I’m more of the sit back in the pocket, maybe take the couple yards if I can get them. But I’m looking to sit in the pocket and try to find the open receiver.” via Ducks Digest. Jay was utilized as a Redshirt in 2020. At 6-6, 218 lbs Butterfield is a taller QB, who will not run as much as Anthony Brown.

Ty Thompson

As a True Freshman in an Oregon Ducks system, Thompson normally would not see any playing time. That is however not considering the fact that he is the first five-star QB to sign with the Ducks. The Dual-threat QB is 6-4, 223. He is sticking in the battle with the more experienced QB’s.

Robby Ashford

Just like Butterfield, Ashford redshirted in 2020. Though he did play for the baseball team this past spring. He appeared in 20 games, made 10 starts, with a double, a triple, and three stolen bases. He is another four-star QB recruit but tabbed as the number one recruit in the state of Alabama. In the scrimmages this fall: Ashford has been showing accuracy along with explosive athleticism (reminiscent of Vernon Adams), Ashford looked like a quarterback who could do a little of everything while raising the ceiling of the offense and potentially shocking the Pac-12 as an all-conference performer. Ashford then showed off that arm with a 44-yard touchdown pass to give his team a shot to win with a two-point conversion and then he showcased his legs with a scramble and score on the two-point try to walk off with a win.

Bradley Yaffe

Has not seen any action in 3 years on the roster. He will most likely be the clipboard Quarterback, serving the role that Jeff Lockie did many years ago.

A.J. Abbott

He Will more than likely not see any action this year, due to some tough competition ahead of him.

Who Wins The Battle?

Unless if Mario Cristobal thinks that Butterfield, Ashford, or Thompson is ready to lead now. He will most likely run Brown out for a couple of games until one of the others are ready. As of right now though, The Oregon Ducks coaching staff has a hard decision to make. Here is the Projected Depth Chart as of right now:
