The Oregon Ducks have received some big news over the last couple days. Not only will linebacker Jeffrey Bassa return, but wide receiver Tez Johnson will return as well. The return of both players will be huge for the Ducks. They’ll be looked at as leaders in their position groups. Johnson announced his return on social media early on Thursday.
The video had a simple message of “I’m back.” With a caption stating “One more time #scoducks” which is in reference to his final season at Oregon.
Tez Johnson was the second-leading receiver in 2023. In 14 games, he caught 86 passes for 1,182 yards and 10 touchdowns and earned honorable mention all-conference honors. The combination of Johnson and Troy Franklin become the first pair of Oregon receivers to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in the same season.
Johnson, the younger adopted brother of Bo Nix, is set to be the leading receiver next season. The receiver helped his brother go out in style with a dominating win for Oregon in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. With Franklin already declaring for the NFL Draft and opting out of the Bowl Game, Johnson showed flashes of what is to come. He led the Ducks with 11 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown.
Having a receiver with the caliber of the senior will be crucial not only for the Ducks as they transition to the BIG 10, but also for incoming QB Dillon Gabriel. He began his career at Troy prior to him transferring to Oregon last season.
The return had been up in the air. Johnson would be eligible to enter the NFL Draft. Oregon fans will be thrilled to see him in an Oregon uniform one final time. He’ll join a QB room that will also see the returns of Gary Bryant, Kyler Kasper, Jurrion Dickey and Traeshon Holden. The Ducks will also have four-star recruits Jeremiah McClellan, Ryan Pellum and Dillon Gresham coming in.
