Padres Acquire Dylan Cease in Exchange for Four Prospects

Dylan Cease

(Quinn Harris-USA TODAY Sports)

Earlier today, I wrote about the three teams that were targeting Dylan Cease, at the end of the day it was the San Diego Padres who came away with him. The Padres needed another starter and just hours before they were to leave for Korea, they acquired one. Jeff Passan first announced the trade on Wednesday night.

TRADE DETAILS
Padres receive: RHP Dylan Cease
White Sox receive: RHP Drew Thorpe (Fantom Sports’ No. 83 prospect; SD No. 5), OF Samuel Zavala (SD No. 7), RHP Jairo Iriarte (SD No. 8), RHP Steven Wilson

The Padres had to send three of their top 10 prospects and right-handed pitcher Steven Wilson. Quite a bit to acquire the services of a pitcher who struggled in 2023. Last season he posted a 4.58 ERA However, you have to give something up to get something. For the most part, Cease has been a solid starter across five big league seasons. He has posted a 3.83 ERA in that time, and he was the runner-up for the 2022 Cy Young Award.

The peripheral numbers show that Cease might have just dealt with some bad luck last season. When it comes to the Padres, Dylan Cease will slot into the rotation behind Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove. Cease will essentially replace Blake Snell. Michael King will slot in at four in the back end of the rotation. At the No. 5 slot the Padres could split time between Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez.

The Padres were a late add to the recent Cease rumors, the Yankees had made an offer prior to the Padres-White Sox game. As of now it is unclear when he’ll join the team and if he’ll be with the team in Korea when they play the LA Dodgers on March 20-21.

If it’s not already clear, the White Sox are in the midst of a rebuild. So adding some prospects makes sense. Especially with top-tier prospects from a rich farm system like the Padres. Chris Getz, the White Sox general manager, is trying to build a base of young players and develop a culture.
