Xander Bogaerts Is Headed To San Diego

Xander Bogaerts and the San Diego Padres have come to an agreement on a $280 million deal for 11 years. This news comes after a big day of free agent signings and only a day after San Diego’s initial target, Trea Turner, signed with the Phillies. Bogaerts, who became a free agent after an 11 year tenure with the Red Sox, has landed his big deal that he was looking for.

The Red Sox were believed to be close on a deal with Bogaerts earlier today in the last hours of the Winter Meetings. While no offers were public, it was suspected that the Red Sox were improving their initial offers. However, the Padres came in at the last minute with a monster deal.

Xander Bogaerts is coming off a very solid 2022 season. While the power was down this year with only 15 home runs, he still managed to bat .307/.377/.456. He also made his fourth all-star appearance and brought home his fifth silver slugger award.

Xander Bogaerts will be entering his age 30 season. This 11 year deal is huge for someone just entering their 30’s. But it’s clear that San Diego felt they needed to make an offer that Bogaerts couldn’t refuse. And he didn’t refuse.

The Padres definitely bolstered their lineup by adding Bogaerts. Now they have Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, and now Xander Bogaerts. San Diego has made it clear that they are still looking to be contenders with a lot of star power. And it looks like they also have another franchise player for the next 11 years.
