“Cheater hits a homerun on a rehab assignment during a steroid suspension.” San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. went yard last night, much to Giants prospect Kade McClure’s dismay. Tatis is currently playing in the minor leagues for the El Paso Chihuahuas due to his PED suspension. He has not played in the major leagues since Oct. 3, 2021, as he was injured from a motorcycle accident at the time he was given his suspension. He is eligible to return to the Padres on April 20.

McClure is in his third season of Triple-A baseball. The Chicago White Sox selected McClure in the sixth round of the 2017 MLB draft. He took offense to the way that Tatis celebrated his home run, as he responded to a tweet about it by calling Tatis a cheater. McClure deleted his tweet after receiving backlash from MLB fans across Twitter.

Tatis’ Suspension

Tatis has previously disputed that he is a cheater as McClure claims. While he did not appeal his suspension, he said that he “inadvertently took a medication to treat ringworm that contained Clostebol.” Furthermore, his suspension occurred at a time when he was not playing in the MLB. He was on a rehab assignment due to the aforementioned motorcycle accident.

However, failing a drug test is failing a drug test, and paired with recovery from his accident, it caused Tatis to miss the entire 2022 season. At the time of the suspension, Padres General Manager AJ Preller said “Ultimately, he’s suspended and can’t play. That’s the biggest thing.” Tatis signed a 14-year, $340 million megadeal on Feb 22, 2021. That season, he hit 42 home runs and placed third in National League MVP voting. 2023 will bring fans of all teams the first opportunity to see Tatis paired up with superstar teammate Juan Soto, whom the Padres traded for at the end of the 2022 season.
