Professional Women’s Hockey League Announced for 2024

The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced its arrival on Tuesday. The league scheduled its inaugural season to start in January of 2024.

Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations, Jeyna Hefford, said in the announcement, “We have never seen more excitement and demand for women’s sports, and through the launch of this league, the top women’s players in the world will have the opportunity to reach even greater heights.”

The announcement from the Professional Women’s Hockey League site, laid down ground rules and important dates to follow. In terms of structure, the PWHL will consist of six teams. Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City, Boston, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal were all selected as cities to host teams. Each of these six teams can start building their roster on Friday, September 1st, when the free agency period starts. Importantly, teams must sign a minimum of six players to three year deals worth at least $80,000 per year.

On top of free agency, there will also be a 2023 PWHL Draft on Monday, Sept. 18th. The draft will consist of a 15 round snake format, with the order of teams selected via lottery system. Players who wish to participate in the PWHL have until September 3rd to declare for the draft. Additionally, players with collegiate eligibility are allowed to declare for the draft. However, those players must get approval from their campus compliance officers.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League front office consists of four Board Members and five Hockey Operations staff. The four members of the board include Billie Jean King, Ilana Kloss, Stan Kasten, and Royce Cohen. Billie Jean King was a former Women’s Tennis star who ranked #1 in the world during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Ilana Kloss ranked #1 in the World in Women’s Tennis Doubles, and in 2001 became the commissioner of World Team Tennis. Stan Kasten is the current President of the Los Angele Dodgers. Royce Cohen is the Senior Vice President of Business Strategy for the Dodgers. Also, the league has financial backing from Mark and Kimbra Walter, the current owners of the Los Angles Dodgers.

With September right around the corner, there’s plenty to look forward to regarding team information and player interest.
