Robert Quinn set the single-season sack record for the Bears, while helping the Bears’ defense lead the team to a 29-3 dismantling of the New York Giants.
Quinn hits 18 sacks on the season
Robert Quinn recorded his 18th sack for the Bears this season, breaking a 37-year old team record. Bears’ legend Richard Dent was the previous record holder with 17.5 sacks. However, Robert Quinn has had such a successful season that many had assumed this record would be his before the season was over.
Part of the confidence in Quinn’s ability to break the record lied in his consistency. Quinn has started and played in 15 of 16 games for the Bears this season. He has at least a half a sack in all but two of those games. On a team where consistent success was limited this year, Quinn was a shining light.
Quinn’s consistent season by the numbers
Quinn was able to record a QB hit in all but two of his games played as well. He has been a constant force for this defensive line. Since Week 2, Quinn has played on at least 72% of the Bears’ defensive snaps in each game. In weeks 1 and 2, he was on the field for 63 and 69% of the team’s defensive snaps. Again, consistency.
Additionally, Quinn has 37 total solo tackles on the year, and 18 tackles-for-loss, which ranks him in the top 3 across the NFL. His record-setting sack today also saw him notch his fourth forced fumble of the year, and for the moment he is leading the league in sacks on the season. Steelers’ talisman T.J. Watt is in second with 17.5 sacks on the season, but has yet to play his Week 17 matchup.
What to look for next in Robert Quinn and the Bears?
Unfortunately, we won’t get to see Robert Quinn carry his dominance into the playoffs. The Bears have been eliminated for two weeks now, so we can only hope to see Quinn add to his total when the Bears travel to Minnesota to close out the season.
We will remember this season as one where the Bears’ defense – while it has its own deficiencies – was able to keep the team in most of their games this year, but the offense continually let them down. Quinn, though, constantly contributed on his end. He had at least two sacks in four different games this year. One of those games was his epic 3.5 sack performance against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. The Bears lost that game 16-13, and that may as well be the most symbolic loss of the season.
Alas, we are left with just one more game to watch Quinn improve on his record for the Bears. Then, we will have another chance to celebrate when (I’m assuming) he is selected for the Pro Bowl.
