The AFC West has made several moves this week. One of the moves came from the Mile High City. The Denver Broncos cut pass rusher Randy Gregory and cornerback Essang Bassey. Head coach Sean Payton made a statement on the decision to move on from both Randy Gregory and Essang Bassey.
“Something we felt was just best for our team right now timingwise. We just felt some of our younger players and where we’re going, it was best for our team.”
Payton also stated that the team is looking for potential trade partners for Gregory before they release him. Randy Gregory signed a signed a five-year, $70 million contract in March 2022. He only played in 10 games for Denver due to a knee injury and a one-game suspension last season. This was a recurring problem for Gregory throughout his career. Durability issues and multiple suspensions both on and off the field have contributed to missing several games in his time in Dallas. Gregory has three sacks and 21 tackles with the Broncos. With Johnathan Cooper and Nik Bonito combining for six sacks against the Chicago Bears, it makes to move on from him.
Essang Bassey was the Broncos’ nickel through the three games. He had a breakout performance in the preseason, recording an interception in each game. It was the game against the Dolphins that led to him being benched. Bassey was responsible for five missed tackles during the 70-point destruction in Miami.
There was a good reason for these moves, as they will be receiving reinforcements. Baron Browning and PJ Locke have been activated from injured reserve. Not to mention Justin Simmons and Josey Jewell are cleared to practice this week. With a defense that has ranked dead last in total yards, they need all the help they can get.
