It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Real Madrid. From losing in embarrassing fashion to their hated rivals, Barca, to confirming an eight point gap behind the same team. Despite it all, there’s still a lot to fight for.

Eight Points Behind Barca

Real Madrid traveled to Palma to face RCD Mallorca in the opening fixture of Sunday’s matches. An early  Nacho own goal was enough to give the home team all three points in spite of Madrid’s efforts.

Barca played later that day and beat Sevilla 3-0 with goals from Gavi, Jordi Alba and Raphinha.

That victory gave them an eight point lead over Real Madrid. Though the league title isn’t wrapped up yet, Xavi and his team have a healthy lead and can afford to lose up to two games and remain on top.

This will be another failed attempt from Real Madrid to defend their league title for the first time since the 2007-2008 season if they don’t drastically improve.

Injuries

Thibaut Courtois underwent tests today and they were positive. Reports suggest that he will definitely miss the Club World Cup semis. However, his availability for the final is possible.

Arancha Rodríguez reported that the keeper will have an MRI tomorrow to know the true extent of the injury and whether he can play the final or not.

On the contrary, Militao and Benzema will definitely miss the competition.

Lucas Vasquez, Hazard and Mendy are also out of the Club World Cup through injury.

The Board rejected Cancelo

It’s reported that Cancelo was offered to Real Madrid but the club rejected the offer. Ancelotti wanted the Portuguese full back to provide more depth to that position but Perez and Jose Angel Sanchez claimed that the academy and first team full backs are enough.

Cancelo would’ve been perfect and an extremely low risk signing. Six month loan with an option to buy. If he impresses, sign him. If he doesn’t, let him return to his parent club and sort his situation out.

It’s difficult times for Los Merengues but let’s see how the club, players and manager reacts.
