Red Sox Ownership Should Sell The Team

The Boston Red Sox used to be one of the most desirable destinations for free agents in MLB history. However, since 2019 the Red Sox ownership has not engaged with any top free agents except for Masataka Yoshida in 2022 and now choosing to bargain instead of spending.

Ever since winning the World Series back in 2018, the Red Sox have had ups and downs seasons only making the ALCS (American League Championship Series) once and two straight last-place finishes in the AL East.

Throughout New England, there is a sense that fans and the team are on two different pages.

Shaky/Questionable Moves

Over the past 2-3 years the Sox have traded/parted ways with elite talent such as Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Alex Verdugo.

In 2020 the Red Sox chose to trade Mookie Betts a former MVP and Superstar who helped bring a championship to Boston in 2018, to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox received top prospects Alex Verdugo, Connor Wong, and Jeter Downs.

Although losing Betts, the Red Sox still had an elite duo between Bogaerts and Rafael Devers. However, in last year’s free agency, the Sox didn’t want to spend money to retain Bogaerts who’s arguably the greatest shortstop in franchise history. He later signed with the San Diego Padres for 280 million which isn’t out of the budget for the Sox. This left the Sox with questions about Trevor Story and whether he could still play the shortstop position or be moved to second base. Leaving an open hole at one of the positions he doesn’t choose.

After firing former general manager Chaim Bloom back in September, everyone thought that the Red Sox were trying to win again. In addition, the Sox hired former player Craig Breslow who helped the Sox win a World Series back in 2013.

Unfortunately, after hearing all the right words Breslow went out and traded the heart and soul of Boston Alex Verdugo. The part stings within the fanbase because he went to the Yankees out of all the teams.

I believe that after all these recent moves and the growing frustration around the fanbase, the Boston Red Sox ownership should sell the team.

Playing “Moneyball” even though the Sox are a very wealthy organization it is a disgrace because the Sox don’t need to be cheap like other teams that don’t have the payroll like the Sox.
