The Detroit Pistons have been in the headlines a lot this season, but not for good reasons. They had high hopes this season when they hired Monty Williams to take over as the head coach. That hasn’t gone the way they expected it to, the Pistons lost an NBA record 28 games. According to Yahoo’s Jake Fisher, the Pistons might be buyers at the deadline.
“…the chatter among NBA executives surrounding Siakam’s potential landing spots has now centered on Indiana, Sacramento and Detroit. Yes, the Pistons keep signaling to opposing executives an interest in buying, sources said, instead of selling off veterans from the league’s lowest team.”
If that’s the case, being buyers at the deadline would prove that the Pistons are committed to building around Cade Cunningham. Their star guard has been exceptional this season despite the team’s downfall. There’s no question that he has been frustrated with the team this season.
Adding a player like Pascal Siakam could help the Pistons move forward if he chooses to sign an extension with the team. With him being a free agent this offseason, there would be no guarantee that he signs a deal to stay in Detroit or wherever else he lands. If the Pistons could add him via trade with the guarantee that he would sign an extension, it would give them a Big Three with Cunningham, Siakam and Jalen Duren.
Siakam would give the Pistons a second or third scorer and would take some pressure off of Duren on the offensive side. As of now, the Pistons have Cunningham (23.2) and Bojan Bogdanovic (20.9) averaging over 20+ points. Duren is the next best with 13.2.
For the Pistons to go after a player like Siakam, they would have to give up some value. Maybe they look to move one of the young bigs like Marvin Bagley or James Wiseman. Both, still have time to develop in the league. They could throw in some veterans like Alec Burks or Joe Harris as well as picks.
