Robert Tonyan agrees to terms with Chicago

Robert Tonyan

Free Agent TE Robert Tonyan is staying in the NFC North, but rather than playing in Green Bay, he’ll be headed to Chicago. He has agreed to a one-year contract with the Bears according to Adam Schefter.

The Bears have kept busy this offseason, and they don’t show signs of stopping. At least, not yet. The busy offseason has included the Bears trading the No. 1 overall pick, as well as signing a plethora of guys including Nate Davis, Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards. Now Robert Tonyan can be added to that list.

Tonyan will be a welcome site for the Bears, even though they already have Cole Kmet. The signing of Tonyan means that the Bears now have two starting-caliber Tight Ends. Especially if the Bears can land the 2020 version of the 28-year-old. That’s the season that he caught 52 passes for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. Since then, Tonyan has recorded 71 receptions for 674 yards and four touchdowns. having both Kmet and Tonyan will allow the Bears to maneuver their offense with two solid TE’s going out for the pass.

The former Packer can be a solid threat for Justin Fields, especially in the RedZone where he’ll help improve the Bears’ 13th-ranked offense. However, this move may also go under the radar with how many transactions the Bears have already made this offseason.

Tonyan originally entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Lions in 2017, but he didn’t make the Lions’ roster and ended up spending some time on the Packers’ practice squad as a rookie. Some thought, Tonyan may land in New York due to his rapport with Aaron Rodgers but that is no longer the case.
