Washington Redskin great Ryan Kerrigan is officially retiring. Kerrigan played ten of his eleven years here in Washington. The last season of his career was played with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Washington Redskins drafted Kerrigan out of Purdue in the first round, 16th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Kerrigan’s Career
Ryan Kerrigan is the all-time franchise leader in sacks for Washington with 95.5 total sacks. He ranked 8th in the NFL in sacks since entering the league in 2011. That is pretty impressive given that in the last two seasons of his career, Kerrigan only registered 5.5 sacks, which all came in 2020. On that list are some potential future Hall of Famers. Ahead of Kerrigan on that list are (in no order) Aaron Donald, J.J. Watt, Von Miller, Cameron Jordan, Chandler Jones, Justin Houston, and Robert Quinn. The outstanding pass rusher also recorded 149 quarterback hits, 120 tackles for loss, 26 forced fumbles, and 457 combined tackles. Kerrigan was also voted to four Pro Bowls in his illustrious career. The Redskins great is also being nominated to be officially considered an all-time franchise great in the franchise’s Ring of Fame in honor of the organization’s 90th season.
Kerrigan will be remembered by many as one of the only bright spots in the Washington organization during his tenure with the team. He played on a couple of playoff teams, but unfortunately never got a postseason win. Most of the teams he played on were at the bottom half of the league. However, he was always was a great leader in the locker room, a team captain, and led this team by example. He was, and always will be, a fan favorite.
Many of fans, including myself, believed he was wildly underappreciated on a national scale. His numbers were always in line with the elite pass rushers like Miller, Watt, and Jones. Some fans were hoping for a return to Washington this season, but sadly, it looks like his return is only to retire. Kerrigan will technically retire as a Commander, but he will always be a Redskin to those who watched him.
