F.C. Barcelona has had an eventful summer. From losing their star man and arguably greatest player of all-time Lionel Messi, to now having senior players take salary cuts to improve the clubs financial status. Club captain Gerard Pique reportedly has agreed to a substantially reduced pay cut to help Barcelona be in good financial standing with La Liga’s rules. It’s noted that other club captains Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba will do the same. This stands well as come Sunday, Barcelona will have a full squad for their match against Real Sociedad.
Barcelona calamity and woes
While the whole world was aware of Barcelona’s financial crisis, we didn’t think it was that bad up until now. Barcelona has managed to bring in some serious talent like Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Rey Manaj, and Sergio Augero. Talent that will definitely boost the team. That’s the good. The bad? Well the departure of the greatest football talent ever Lionel Messi. With La Liga’s very strict spending rules combined with Barcelona’s frivolous spending, the club has dug themselves a very deep hole. A hole that is still there even after Barcelona’s highest earning player leaves their wage bill and joins PSG. Memphis Depay & Eric Garcia were two new players announced this past June. They now become registered players for Barcelona a DAY before their match on Sunday due to the salary cuts. One day…
Barcelona’s spending cap (spending money on players and coaches) has fallen from €600 million in the 2019-20 season to an expected €200m now. A significant drop that puts the club on a tight spending lease. For a club that loves to splash the cash on players, it could be awhile before we see any big names head to the Catalan giants.
Looking forward
Having players reduce their pay cut is a good start for F.C. Barcelona, but to reach financial freedom the process will be long. Credit to the club captains for taking the initiative to help out. It will entirely be on Barcelona to figure things out, and they will. Just give it time.
F.C. Barcelona takes on Real Sociedad tomorrow, 2pm to kick-off their La Liga campaign.
