We are officially in the dog days of the NBA of the offseason. Not much news is coming around these days. This is why next week’s episode of the HoopCulture Podcast will be a mailbag episode. Though, on Monday, the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA Draft Scoot Henderson guaranteed he would win Rookie of the Year while appearing on Playmaker.
“My goal, obviously, is to win Rookie of the Year, and I will win Rookie of the Year,” Henderson said.
It takes a lot of confidence to say that, but that’s what Henderson has built since he first was on the NBA Radar. He took an alternate route by selecting to forego college and play for the G-League Ignite straight out of High School.
He may have some tough competition in winning the coveted award with Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller, Ausar Thompson, Amen Thompson and many more highly touted rookies from the 2023 NBA Draft. Not to mention, last year’s No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren will also be considered for the award.
The only question regarding Scoot Henderson at this point, is whether he’ll start or come off the bench. The Blazers have not been able to find a suitable trade partner for Damian Lillard yet and he’s stated he’ll play for the Blazers if not traded. Even if Lillard is traded, the Portland Trail Blazers have Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe. According to an NBA source, the early favorite is that Simons and Sharpe would start in Portland’s backcourt.
Of course, no matter where he is playing Henderson figures to have a big role for the Blazers this next season.
“… My goals for the season are to help win a lot of games,” Henderson continued. “to embrace the position I’m in, to embrace my role on the team, to be a great listener, and watching film and applying it to the next game.”
Though, winning Rookie of the Year was just one of the lofty goals that Scoot Henderson had stated on the Playmaker. He also mentioned that he wants to “be remembered as best point guard to ever play the game.”
