Senegal vs Netherlands Match Review

Senegal and Netherlands met in the Al Thumama Stadium for the second match of Monday’s fixtures. It was a very entertaining match and Netherlands now lead the group after winning the game 2-0.

1st Half

This was the most entertaining game and half of the tournament so far. Both teams moved the ball with intent and created chances in their attempt to score.

In the opening seconds, Sarr pickpocketed De Ligt and squared it back to Boulaye Dia, but his shot was blocked. Four minutes later, Cody Gakpo found himself in the box with time and space. He tried to find Blind at the back post but was unsuccessful.

In the eighth minute, Sarr’s volley met one of his supporter’s hands as it flew over the bar. Minutes later, Gakpo made a yard for himself, whipped in another cross to the back post and successfully found Daley Blind but he could only head it wide.

Frenkie De Jong found himself 1v1 with Edouard Mendy but got caught in two minds which gave the Senegalese defenders enough time to recover and clear the ball.

Senegal’s last big chance of the half came in the 25th minute. Sarr beat his man and rifled one towards the goal but it was blocked by Virgil Van Dijk.

Steven Berghuis had the Netherlands’ last chance of the half. The ball settled nicely for him on his favored left foot but it flew over the bar.

It was an enthralling first half and both teams needed the win if they didn’t want to look up at Ecuador in the table.

2nd Half

Van Dijk’s header flew over the bar in the opening minutes of the second half. Minutes later, Nampalys Mendy won the ball from De Jong in the middle of the park. He strided forward then played in Boulaye Dia but his shot was saved by the keeper.

In the 72nd minute, Idrissa Gueye found himself on top of the 18 yard box and tested the keeper.

Cody Gakpo got his country off the mark in this World Cup. De Jong saw him making the diagonal run and didn’t think twice about finding him. Mendy came out to collect but failed and the PSV attacker pounced on the opportunity. 1-0 to The Dutch.

Papa Gueye tried to respond instantly but his long range shot was saved by Andries Noppert.

Klasseen killed the game in stoppage time after Mendy’s saved shot fell to him and he tapped it in.

This win now makes the table very interesting as both The Netherlands and Ecuador are tied on two points with two goals scored and none conceded.
