On Wednesday, Sergio Busquets posted on his social media an announcement stating that he would leave Barcelona at the end of the 2022/2023 season. The Spanish midfielder turned down the contract extension offer on reduced terms from the Catalunya giant.

Sergio Busquets broke onto the scenes as a 19-year-old young man in 2008. From then, he became an integral part of Pep Guardiola‘s legendary Barcelona team that won a treble. The Spaniard had an illustrious career donning the Barca jersey: eight La Liga titles, three Champions League, and various more titles. In this period, he also became the World Cup and Euro champion with Spain in 2010 and 2012.&nbsp;
In his 18 years at the club, Sergio Busquets has become one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. His brilliant mind and tempo control were nearly unmatched in his prime. A skinny defensive midfielder who didn’t need to play physical football to win possession is the best description of Busquets.
The Spanish became club captain in his last two years, mentoring the younger generation of Barca midfielders like Gavi and Pedri.
Possible Sergio Busquets Replacement
Barcelona will need to find a defensive midfielder like Busquets to complement Gavi, De Jong, and Pedri. One option from La Liga is Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who is only 24 years old and has his prime ahead. Other options that Barcelona can explore can be from the Dutch League. PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare is a physical defensive midfielder who can help Barcelona tremendously with his ball recoveries. The other can be Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer, who just broke out this season and became a vital part of a flying season for the Dutch leader.
With that being said, finding a replacement for Sergio Busquets isn’t a task that can be completed in one or two years. Sergio is a generational talent and is a sweet combination of physical and skill – something the players mentioned above cannot truly replicate.
