Another game, another disappointing result for Graham Potter and Chelsea. The 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspurs may have been the last straw for many Chelsea fans. This season seems far beyond the team’s reach for many people: sitting dead in the middle of the Premier League table, eliminated in all domestic cup competitions, and on the verge of being eliminated from the Champions League. Graham Potter is to blame after failing to get positive results with this stacked squad. How should Chelsea handle his contract in the upcoming period?
Potter couldn’t do his magic
Graham Potter led an underrated Brighton and Hove Albion to an outstanding record early in the season. His mesmerizing offensive play caught the attention of many big teams as the next big-time coach. In the same period, Chelsea struggled with Thomas Tuchel, leading to the German coach being dismissed. Taking on the opportunity, Todd Boehly and company brought in Potter with promises of an improved playstyle. But this is far from the truth.
After the first few games, the offense still looked stale, even with all those bright stars. But Chelsea still managed to get out of the Group stage phase of the Champions League, which is the only bright spot of the period. After the World Cup, Todd Boehly made serious changes to the lineup to improve the results. Names like Enzo Fernandez, Joao Felix, and Mykhaylo Mudryk were brought in with unimaginable fees.
It is now late February, over a month after the club fixture resumed, and nothing has changed. Chelsea is still looking dreadful on both sides of the ball. Their 23 goals in the EPL this season are the sixth-worst now. And after failing to score against Tottenham, they only managed to put one goal past the opponents in February. ONE GOAL.
Tenth in the Premier League and eliminated, or on the verge of being so, from cup competitions are unimaginable scenes for a club with a rich history.
Now, what to do?
Potter has star power in his hand, and it is clear that he cannot handle these players and put them in a correct system where they can thrive.
Now comes two sides of the argument. Some say that if this season is gone, why not let Potter continue? But for most Chelsea fans, the results have become unbearable. They want him gone immediately.
If they get bounced from the UEFA Champions League by Dortmund in March, there will be no guarantee that Graham Potter keeping his position until the end of this year. Team performance has been underwhelming, and it seems it won’t change in the next period.
Sure, maybe Todd Boehly won’t fire his coach this season. Five years’ worth of contract is pretty hefty. But next season is a must for Chelsea to get a good outcome after spending tons of money. And that means Potter has to leave.
