Trae Young needs finger surgery and will miss at least 4 weeks

Since their 2021 Eastern Conference Finals run, the furthest the Atlanta Hawks could make it has been the play-in tournament. Considering how talented the Hawks are in their active rotation, this is not a good look. After landing the first-overall pick, the front office could be on edge when choosing between Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

When the Hawks brought Murray on board in 2022, they were optimistic about his potential alongside Young. Murray’s exceptional midrange shooting, unmatched finishing ability, and capacity to make plays while defending his position were all seen as valuable attributes. However, these plans were disrupted when fans noticed their struggle to coexist on the court.

Young and Murray are highly skilled, ball-dominant players who constantly seek to score or create opportunities for their teammates. Conversely, building a franchise around two stars with similar playstyles is not ideal. This predicament leaves the front office with no choice but to consider a trade.

When deciding between Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, the answer should be very clear for the Atlanta Hawks.

Although Trae Young and Dejounte Murray are both excellent at what they do, the Atlanta Hawks must lean on the player with higher value. This choice should be a no-brainer for the front office.

Atlanta’s most promising path forward involves trading Murray and bracing Young’s support for the upcoming season. Young, who earned an all-star spot this season, has consistently demonstrated his worth. He led the franchise in their 2021 conference finals run and has never failed to show up and give his best effort.

In 54 games this season, the former Oklahoma Sooner averaged 25.7 points and 10.8 assists with a true shooting percentage of 58.5. Despite missing the playoffs, NBA fans worldwide know how dangerous Young can be when the lights are brightest.

Several teams could be interested in a trade involving Murray. The perfect return for Atlanta would be high-end role players who can contribute on both ends. With the help of their first-overall pick, the Hawks could easily finish as a top-six seed in the East next season.
