Should the Bucks Consider Replacing Damian Lillard?

Bucks Preview: Lillard

(Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports)

Of all the teams in the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks have shocked the world with a disappointing start to the season. They have been unable to buy a win, and several players within the locker room appear ready to find a new home. Many expected Milwaukee to remain atop the Eastern Conference, yet they stand as the second-worst team eight games into the year.

One of the countless reasons for the Bucks’ seven losses is the fit of eight-time all-star Damian Lillard. Statistically, he is having another legendary season. However, the eye test is always the most important evaluator in basketball.

Furthermore, if Lillard and the Bucks struggle to turn the ship around, the front office must consider a trade that will benefit their future. This seems to be the only option, as the fans and city of Milwaukee will desire change.

Damian Lillard could be involved in a package at the trade deadline if the Milwaukee Bucks receive their expected return.

On paper, the Milwaukee Bucks have the league’s most powerful duo with Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo. These two dominate every aspect of the game on both ends of the court. Conversely, they have failed to step up together and lead the team to victory.

Lillard, in particular, is posing more of an issue. Although he is averaging 27.3 points and 6.7 assists, the Weber State product has had multiple unacceptable performances. These inconsistencies, plus an abysmal defensive rating of 117.9, have damaged the Bucks’ potential in the Eastern Conference.

Moreover, Lillard has caused severe concern with his shooting from three-point territory. In October, the Weber State product shot 26.7% from beyond the arc on nine attempts, including a four-point performance against Memphis. These numbers have gotten better, but they are still not where they should be. Additionally, he is taking highly-contested jumpers instead of moving with the offense and allowing the ball to find his hands in space.

That said, the Bucks will be expected to be patient with their superstar, given his resume as a professional. Unfortunately for Lillard, this patience will quickly run out if Milwaukee continues to lose winnable games. This makes the trade deadline very interesting, especially considering his contract and abilities at age 34.
