Real Sociedad and Manchester United met in the Anoeta Stadium. This was an important match as it would decide who finished first in the group.
It was evident that Sociedad came into this game with the intention to win as they started off on the front foot. Their pressing and passing were done at a very high level.
Man United started to grow into the game around the ten minute mark. They acclimatized to the match and asserted their dominance.
In the 16th minute, Bruno Fernandes found Ronaldo in a pocket of space. He drove, then slid in Alejandro Garnacho with a lovely, weighted through ball. The youngster took two touches before rifling the ball into the roof of the net to give his team the lead on the night.
Ten minutes after his goal, Garnacho found himself in the box once again. He worked the ball onto his right foot for a shot but it flew over the bar.
Álex Remiro and Ronaldo met 1v1 after a mix up at the back. However, the striker’s lobbed shot could only find the roof of the net.
De Gea kept the score at 1-0 going into the half-time break with a superb double save in the 43rd minute.
Sociedad were pushing for the equalizer and they had a good opportunity to do so in the 68th minute through a header from Carlos Fernández which went over the bar.
United struggled to keep possession of the ball for large spells of the second half as La Real were pushing for the equalizer.
The Red Devils fought until the end for the second goal that would’ve confirmed their spot as group winners but failed. Real Sociedad top the group and automatically qualify while Man United must play a play-off against one of the teams that dropped down from the UCL.
